If you’d like to undertake a loft conversion in Ripley but have yet to get the process underway, what’s been holding you back?
New research from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) found that one-third of UK homeowners are put off of carrying out major home renovation works because they are scared of hiring a cowboy builder.
According to the organisation’s survey, this means that the UK economy is missing out on £10 billion a year from property owners spending on improving their homes. The FMB estimates that, if everyone had confidence in the building industry, homeowners would spend an average of £40,000 on their homes over the next five years.
So, if you’re one of the people who are worried about finding a reliable builder for your project, what can you do?
Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, advised homeowners to ask friends and family for recommendations of builders in their area.
“If they can’t help, consumers should approach a professional trade association like the Federation of Master Builders who can put them in touch with a vetted and inspected building firm,” he asserted.
With the property market in the UK the way it is at the moment, an increasing number of homeowners are opting to improve rather than move – and adding extra space to your home could be just what you need.
Sprucing up your interiors are also a popular project for 2018, according to research published recently by Plentific, which noted that 19 per cent of those surveyed plan to do some interior design this year and spend more on this than they did in 2017.
